Three centuries ago, Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was an un-known religious figure in the Europe and Arabian Peninsula. However as the British and other European empires began exploring India, they documented the regions' religious traditions. The Legends and Thoughts of the Buddhists describes the legends, philosophies, and ideologies surrounding Buddha and Buddhism through the lens of science and history. This volume focuses on the assessment of religious traditions, par-ticul-arly Buddha's hagiography, the monastic system, the linguistic assessment of Pali, the canonical language of Buddhism. It also ex-plores the differences between Buddhist and the Western traditions.
R. Spence Hardy (1803-1868) was a Methodist church missionary in Ceylon. He was a scholar of Buddhism and the Pali language. He collected several Pali, Sanskrit, and Sinhalese manuscripts associated with Buddhism. He has authored titles like The British Government and Idolatry of Ceylon, and Eastern Monachism: An Account of the Laws of the Order of the Order of the Mendicants; A Manual of Buddhism in its Modern Development and Christianity and Buddhism Compared.
