It would be hard to find a more satisfying hero than the young warrior Red Kangaroo, who by his mental and physical prowess became a chief of his tribe - the revered and powerful Red Chief of the Gunnedah district in northern New South Wales. His story is a first-rate tale of adventure but it is something more - a true story handed down from generation to generation by its hero s tribe and given by the last survivor, King Bungaree, to the white settlers of the district.

Ion Idriess is Australias best-selling author, with 36 books currently in print. Stan Ewing was a policeman in Gunnedah who passed over his fathers notes on tribal stories of the fabled Red Kangaroo (about 1750), to encourage Idriess to write the full tale - known as The Red Chief since publication in 1953.

  • The Red Chief is the only presettlement story we have, now in its 20th edition. In this we have the main sources Idriess used to create Red Kangaroos place in the Gunnedah Tribes history. Includes the previously unpublished Cassillis Raid. Preface by the films producer Kenton Campbell.
