Come Listen with Me is a heartwarming story about a little girl with a cochlear implant, who sets off on an adventure with her mum. Together, they explore their vibrant neighbourhood, tuning in to all the wonderful sounds around them,—from the pitterpatter of raindrops to the distant hum of passing traffic. Written by paediatric Speech Pathologist, Jemma McEwen, this sensory adventure invites young readers to discover the magic of listening and the way sounds bring the world to life!
Author: Jemma is a paediatric speech pathologist and mum to two young girls (4yrs and 11mths). She holds a Masters in Speech and Language Pathology. She grew up in Wollongong before relocating to the ACT in 2016 to begin her career as a speech pathologist. It was there that she met her husband, Josh. For the past eight years she has worked in various not-for-profit organisations, which support children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Working with and supporting these families was the inspiration for her book. Jemma has grown up with a love for reading, which was instilled in her by her mother and is something she hopes to pass on to her own daughters. Illustrator: Amy Jacinta is an illustrator based in the Adelaide Hills. Since graduating a Bachelor of Illustration and Design from University of South Australia she works in a range of picture making processes including soft pastel, colour pencil, watercolour and woodcut, and often combines traditional media with digital collage. Her work evokes hope as she strives to inspire courage through her illustrations for all walks of life. Her love of picture books and all things art is shared with her two kids and Shmoodle the pooch!
• A good starting point for a discussion about cochlear implants, what they are and how they help • An inclusive book that highlights the wonder of the natural world around us • Encourages listening skills and being present
