Great Pilgrimage Walks in Europe covers 40 routes in North-West, Nordic, Central and Southern Europe, presenting a wide spectrum of sacred destinations, steeped in history and diverse cultures. The walks range from those that require a commitment of a week or more to others that can be done in a day. The longest pilgrimages are divided into sections for those who wish to walk only part of the route. These are journeys for all travellers with an emphasis on the spiritual benefits as much as the physical ones. The end point is the focus of the walks but they have also been chosen for the sites of religious significance from soaring cathedrals to holy shrines as well as areas of natural beauty that will be seen along the way. A fact file for each walk gives its length, likely duration, best time to undertake, what kind of conditions will be encountered and which are the main highlights to be seen. The text describes the main features of the route and the photographs illustrate the historic and religious buildings, the landscape, and the towns and villages featured. Each walk is plotted on an accompanying map.
