Eva Evelyn Hanks is a writer who also happens to be married to a bank robber. She has not had a book published before but events in her life have forced her writing into an area hardly any of us really understands - what it is like to be in prison or to love someone in prison. 'Eva' has faced much hardship in her own life, but managed to overcome the odds, re-enter the workplace, and find a voice as a writer, an excellent writer. 'Test of Faith' is part of the CSPI Social Justice series, founded by Ruth Morris. It offers a unique multi-voiced perspective on prison life - predominantly from the wife of an inmate, but also from her husband, the other inmates, the guards, the media, and others. The reader follows the couple from the bank robbery to his release from prison years later. Along the way we learn about arbitrariness and cruelty, which are inherent in the current penitentiary system. The book works because the reader comes to sympathise with the main characters and understand their plight, as well as to understand a system that most of us assume will never touch our lives.
