From the moment an autistic child gets diagnosed, parents and caregivers must navigate a host of decisions that will affect their child's future. How can you tell if a service is truly helpful? What kind of education plan is best? Where can you find the best advocacy tools? And how can you prepare for the future? The Informed Parent is a practical guide designed to empower families in making their own choices in school, autism services and parenting. Anne Borden King speaks with psychologists, ethicists, teachers, parents and advocates about the practical challenges of raising an autistic child today. Focusing on school and therapy settings, as well as the transition to adulthood and work, housing and independence, The Informed Parent is a balanced and inside look at research and services, with the information and tools to help you make your own choices in the journey of parenting an autistic child.
Anne Borden King is a Toronto-based podcaster, journalist and human rights advocate. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times, Healthy Debate and Thinking Person's Guide to Autism, among other publications. She has written two e-books about autism and she is the host of Noncompliant, a popular podcast about neurodiversity. As co-founder of Autistics for Autistics, the Canadian autistic self-advocacy organization, Anne has presented before all levels of government, helping to shift policy on children's rights and disability inclusion. She is founder and director of the Autistic Health Access Project, which educates health professionals about making their practices more accessible for autistic people. All of this, and her experience as an autistic parent of an autistic child, informs this book.
Informative and empowering guide for parents of autistic children that looks at how they can make informed decisions on key aspects of care.
