The only physiology text built just for NNPs—concise, visual, and packed with practice-ready learning tools
Includes CourseConnect: Know It. Use It. Test It. – The Smarter Way to Learn and Succeed!
This core neonatal text provides a student-friendly, clinically relevant resource that bridges fetal development with neonatal physiology across systems. Written by leaders in NNP education, this text presents complex physiology in an accessible format using visuals, developmental timelines, and case-linked content. The second edition includes updated chapters, a new focus on genetic principles, and audio teaching moments that reflect how clinicians learn. Perfect for hybrid and accelerated APRN programs, this resource helps students build a strong foundation before advancing to diagnostic and management coursework. Know, use, and test your understanding of course content with CourseConnect—an interactive learning platform included with your print purchase.
What’s New:
Adds a new chapter on genetic principles in neonatology
Streamlines content on disorders for clearer alignment with NNP learning needs
Expands visual learning tools, including updated illustrations and diagrams
Enhances audio lessons to reinforce core physiology topics across chapters
Refines chapter organization for improved flow and instructional flexibility
Key Features:
Covers fetal and neonatal systems, developmental timelines, genetic foundations, and common physiological challenges across body systems
Prepares learners to confidently apply physiologic principles in neonatal care and build a strong foundation for advanced clinical courses

Amy J. Jnah, DNP, NNP-BC, is a veteran of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps, an alumna of the Marquette University School of Nursing (BSN), East Carolina University College of Nursing (MSN), and University of Alabama at Birmingham (DNP). Dr. Jnah is currently an associate professor and director of the neonatal nurse practitioner program at the East Carolina University College of Nursing. She also serves as an assistant professor (adjunct) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Her clinical interests include hyperbilirubinemia, neonatal resuscitation, the transition to extrauterine life, and issues that affect late-preterm infants. Dr. Jnah is a master trainer for the American Academy of Pediatrics Helping Babies Breathe program, and an Instructor-Mentor for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Her academic interests include mentoring, role modeling, and the integration of multisensory teaching innovations within distance education.Dr. Jnah has received numerous awards and honors, which include the Reserve Officer Training Corps academic scholarship (1994–1998), distinguished graduate of the East Carolina University neonatal nurse practitioner program (2007–2008), and East Carolina University Scholar-Teacher of the Year (2017–2018) award. She is an active member of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN), the National Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NANNP), and the Academy of Neonatal Nursing (ANN), as well as the Carolinas Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (CANNP).
